Facilitation is the art of enabling necessary conversations. Whether for a single day or over the course of many months, we work with groups to move from where they are to where they need to go. Under the right conditions, people can connect across divides, overcome conflicts and arrive at solutions that they did not know were possible - our job is to create those conditions. We work deftly with complex, technical and sensitive topics and prepare extensively before walking into the room, designing a process to fit the goals and group dynamics. In the room, we listen deeply to both what is said and unsaid and help groups reflect on the impact of hidden dynamics and missing voices. We design for creativity, tinkering with expectations to shake loose unexpected ideas. In every conversation, we strive to ensure that all participants feel welcome and valued.

What this looks like:  Strategy development and planning for organizations and multi-stakeholder projects. 

Sometimes more information is needed before change is possible. If your group has unanswered questions, or if we uncover the need for additional information in our work together, we help you learn what you need to know. This assessment can take many forms, both qualitative and quantitative. We focus on deep listening, ensuring that marginalized and underrepresented voices are heard, and uncovering hidden questions to develop a nuanced understanding of the status quo. We bring both scientific rigor and an intuitive ear to the interpretation of findings and help organizations visualize and understand results. 

What this looks like:  Focus groups, stakeholder meetings, one-on-one interviews, surveys, peer bench-marking research.

Citizens deserve to shape the future of their communities. Too often, efforts to engage the public in decision-making are formulaic, inaccessible and just plain dull. It doesn’t have to be this way! We help groups think creatively about why, when and how to invite people into their planning processes. From focus groups to community conversations to pop-up art installations, there are numerous ways to design public engagement. The goals determine the tools, with results that are meaningful, focused and fun. 

What this looks like:  Design of public engagement processes, facilitation of public engagement activities.

Words have great power, and precise, evocative language is an essential tool for transformation. As your group goes through a process of change, you may find that written pieces have a role to play. We harness the power of language in our work with groups and individuals, and all projects include some written elements. If you identify a need for a more extensive written project, we can work together to define the scope and goals. 

What this looks like:  Review and revision of existing communication materials, development of grant proposals, creation of content to support new or revised organizational identity and initiatives. 

Information and inspiration are important precursors to transformation. We frequently lead and participate in presentations and workshops on topics related to climate action, sustainability planning, community engagement and transformative group process. We will happily tailor content to your audience. Regardless of format and venue, our sessions always prioritize participant interaction and dialogue.

What this looks like:  Conference presentations and workshops, presentations to multi-stakeholder groups, participation in panel discussions. 

Much of the work of transformation happens behind the scenes. Through empathetic listening and thoughtful questioning, we work with leaders to identify where change is needed and how to make that change possible. Using many of the techniques we bring to group facilitation, we help leaders identify and articulate where their groups are stuck, where opportunities are emerging and how to move forward.
